Welcome

In its inaugural year, the theme of The Syngenta Photography Award, "Rural-Urban", explores the relationship and tensions between these two environments.

For the first time in history, over half of the world's population now lives in urban areas. By 2050, when the world's population is expected to reach nine billion, nearly two thirds of people worldwide – six billion people – are expected to live in urban areas. According to a UK Government report, "competition for land, water and energy will intensify while the effects of climate change will become increasingly apparent."* Balancing these tensions is critical.

Artists and photographers were invited to interpret this theme in the broadest sense to stimulate dialogue about our changing planet through photography.
